ANDY M. "MACK" ACKMAN, age 52, of 460 North Cedar Street, Galesburg, Illinois passed with his family and friends by his side on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 9:49 A.M. at the OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. He was born on January 6, 1956 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Herman L. and Alice Jean Feikert Ackman. He married Sherry Wagner on February 16, 1974 in Galesburg, Illinois. She survives of Galesburg, Illinois.
Also surviving are two sons, Dennis (Cathy) Ackman of East Galesburg, Illinois and Andy (Crystal) Ackman of Creve Coeur, Illinois; four grandchildren, Holly Voss, D.J. Ackman, Stephanie Ackman and A.J. Ackman; three brothers, Bill (Jodi) Ackman of Stronghurst, Illinois, Bob (Janice) Ackman of Hinesville, Georgia and Skip Ackman of Ashley, Indiana and one sister, Velvet (Charlie) Bailey of East Moline, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Alvin Ackman.
He was reared and educated in Galesburg, Illinois graduating from the Galesburg High School in 1974. He was a welder, mechanic, fabricator and facilitator; working at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg, Illinois for 32 years as a welder; working as a metal fabricator and mechanic at the Shade Tree Garage at his home; working as a maintenance worker in farming in Abingdon, Illinois; and teaching Auto Mechanics at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America in Galesburg, Illinois. His favorite sayings were "What's Goin' On?" and "If one's good, a hundred has to be better". His life was as packed as his garage and every trip to the drag races with his oldest son, Dennis or fishing with his youngest son, Andy Mark was packed with memories and adventure. He was a loving husband, father, granddad, brother, uncle and friend. He was always ready and willing to rearrange his projects to help family and friends, which he continued after his passing by becoming an organ donor. He was always helping someone in need and never expecting anything in return. To those who knew Andy as a friend, there is sadness; to those who crossed Andy, shame; but to those who loved Andy Ackman there is sadness that can only be comforted by each other.
